Artist Statement

My connection to nature is rooted in my upbringing in rural Ohio where I’d spend hours outside building homes for unappreciative toads and catching lightning bugs. Nature has always inspired me and watercolor is the medium that I practice most fervently. I gain inspiration by observing my backyard, local forests, gardens and beyond. I’m drawn to dramatic skies, sensuous lines of tree branches and colorful autumn leaves. Watercolor enables me to create both impressionistic and realistic details. My palette typically consists of three to five colors and I’ll use those same pigments for several paintings in order to discover how they interact and to unify the series. Like nature, the possibilities of watercolor are challenging but are also limitless.
